Since 2015, Águas e Energia do Porto has been running a behavioural change programme to encourage the consumption of tap water.
Under the slogan ‘Drink Porto Water’, the programme to encourage consumption of water from the public network aims to create a habit among Porto residents of drinking tap water. One of the strongest arguments is its price: estimates indicate that tap water in Porto is 450 times cheaper than bottled water.
The programme is based on five main areas: Control, Health, Safety, Price and Taste.
The message is simple: tap water in Porto is safe, good for your health and inexpensive.
According to analyses carried out on the domestic distribution network, Porto has excellent water quality in 99.7% of cases. Águas e Energia do Porto carries out more than 50,000 analyses every year, thus ensuring absolute control of the quality of water for human consumption, in accordance with World Health Organisation standards.
The Water Safety Plan, developed by Águas e Energia do Porto, ensures that the water maintains excellent quality levels, preventing any risks to consumers. According to the Catholic University study, 73% of Porto residents recognise the good quality of the public water supply, yet only 37.6% of Porto residents admit to always drinking tap water. It is therefore extremely important to publicise and raise awareness of the good quality of the public water supply, guaranteed by regular analyses carried out by the Águas do Porto Laboratory.
Do you already have your Porto. bottle?
Created as part of the Behavioural Change Programme for Tap Water Consumption, ‘Drink Porto Water: It's Good Every Day!’, the bottles are available in 0.5L and 1.5L sizes.
The larger glass bottle is a more classic bottle for the table and has an isothermal base that helps maintain the water temperature. As it is intended for serving tap water, it does not have a cap, allowing the chlorine to evaporate.
The 0.5L bottle is made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), a type of resistant, reusable and durable plastic, and consists of a bottle and cup. The purpose of this container is to make tap water portable, allowing you to take it with you and fill it up anywhere.
The bottles can be purchased at the customer service area of Águas e Energia do Porto's headquarters, on Rua Barão de Nova Sintra, or at the Water Pavilion. The glass bottle costs €8 each and the smaller one costs €5.
Designer bottles
The bottles were created by Teresa Soares and Paulo Seco, the winning duo of the ‘Dás o litro pelo Porto?’ (Do you give a litre for Porto?) competition, promoted by Águas e Energia do Porto.
The competition arose following the ‘Beba Água do Porto’ (Drink Porto Water) programme, launched by the municipal company with the aim of promoting tap water. Aware of the need to change behaviours regarding the consumption of tap water and based on the results obtained in laboratory analyses, which are always very close to 100%, Águas e Energia do Porto launched this programme to change the consumption habits of Porto's residents.
While the safety provided by these analyses and the low price of Porto water compared to bottled water are considered strengths of this campaign, portability was identified as an area for improvement and led to the creation of Porto bottles.
